Leafless Sumac

Sumac are marvelous trees.  There are not enough poems written about them.

Leafless Sumac

The leafless sumac stand
like forked lightning,
tipped with fire,
a forest of thunderbolts,
making the air electric.

Yes, the sumac. We used to make lemonade from them (something they taught us in scouts). Funny how we always called it that even though there was no lemons in it. I guess because sumacade sounds so undelicious. I can’t, now remember what it tasted like. Sugar I’d imagine, since that was the only ingredient aside from the sumac buds (boiled) and water.
